Frequently Asked Questions

What is social action?

Imagine your school or your local community as a giant stage where life plays out every day. Maybe there are things happening on that stage that you don’t agree with or think could be done better.

Social action is when you see there’s an issue and join with other like-minded people to make a positive change on that stage.

What is the Mental Health Foundation?

The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand has been the nation’s trusted, independent voice for better mental health for almost 50 years.

Our charity promotes everyday actions that lift mental wellbeing, provides tools that support people through tough times, and advocates for a better mental health system and society. Check us out at mentalhealth.org.nz

What is mental health?

There is no health without mental health.

Just like physical health, mental health is something we all have. So, we need to look after it. Good mental health boosts our physical health, creates resilience and helps us to feel happy, confident and secure.

We believe everyone can enjoy good mental health and wellbeing – whether you have an experience, or a diagnosis, of mental illness or distress or not.

Wellbeing is for everyone!

Is it easy to start a Rangatahi Rise group?

It’s simple. All you need is a group of young people who are passionate about making positive changes to the mental health and wellbeing of rangatahi in your kura, school or community.

It helps to have an adult onboard too – someone who’s also a passionate advocate for the cause. They can sort out any approval processes or help if there’s an issue.

The Template folder has resources that can help you with setting up your group, like copy for newsletters and daily notices.

How do I get started?

Start by talking to a teacher or staff member at your school who can support the committee.

Find a teacher who understands mental health, such as a health teacher, dean or guidance counsellor. There may also be a staff member who students naturally identify as the “go-to” person for mental health support at your school, and they can also assist your committee. Ask the support teacher to help recruit more members by posting information in the daily school notices or making announcements during assemblies.

Remember, we’re here to help too. You can also arrange a Zoom meeting with our team, the lead teacher, and yourself so we can provide further information and help you get started – email us at rangatahi@mentalhealth.org.nz
